Case Studies A Need for Speed
Most high-level searches are conducted over a multi-month period. In one critical situation, The Joel Paul Group was called upon to fill a key position in one week!
The board of directors was increasingly unhappy with the performance of the incumbent executive, whom it had hired directly 18 months earlier. It was an uncomfortable fit – professionally and culturally. Unfortunately, a change had to be made immediately in light of several pressing management imperatives. The client turned to JPG for help.
Our long-term relationship with the Board of Directors and senior management team was based on a continual dialogue focused on issues and solutions. Consequently, we intimately understood the organization’s mission and objectives. What’s more we knew the exact type of professional who would succeed in that cultural context. Indeed, JPG had the ideal person in mind.
The candidate held a doctorate in their field of service and had direct experience in the nonprofit sector served by the organization. Because there was a distinct need for speed, JPG quickly presented the ideal candidate and arranged all required interviews. Management immediately saw that this candidate represented an excellent match. Negotiations and a contract were finalized in one week.
That was eight years ago. The executive has performed admirably and effectively ever since.
The Joel Paul Group’s long-term relationship in mentoring the client organization gave us the essential insights needed to swiftly fill the slot. Our knowledge of the institution – coupled with our database of thousands of nonprofit industry specialists – enabled us to meet the rigorous timetable and make the match.
In record time.
Transition Without Imposition
A senior education professional had grown weary of his position. With each day, he felt progressively more under-challenged … and over-qualified. He needed a change and contacted the executive search team at The Joel Paul Group.
We had been conducting a high-level search for which this candidate seemed the model match. Indeed, when presented with the career opportunity, he termed it his “dream job.” JPG moved forward in presenting his credentials, scheduling all interviews and ultimately finalizing the employment agreement.
Making the transition, however, would create a potential imposition.
The candidate had been spearheading several important initiatives for the organization he was leaving. As much as he wanted to move quickly into his new spot, he was concerned about the disruption in continuity. In no way did he want to leave his previous employer “high and dry.”
JPG devised the solution.
We structured a contractual compromise that involved having the executive “consult” with the new organization while allowing him to wrap up his prior commitments. By carefully splitting his time and phasing into his new role, he was able to lay the groundwork for assuming his new responsibilities (and get to know his fellow colleagues in the process) – while effectively fulfilling his prior commitments.
The candidate was conscientious. So was The Joel Paul Group. Our experience helped us conceptualize a solution that minimized disruption and maximized continuity … for all parties involved.
Successful Succession
The Joel Paul Group had consulted with a leading medical university on multiple assignments for more than a decade. Notably, our role involved working side-by-side with the institution’s long-time CEO and founder in a consulting capacity.
So when the Board Chairman and CEO respectively said, “It’s time to find a successor,” JPG knew just what it would take to successfully fill the high-level, high-profile spot.
Our long-standing relationship with the university had involved multiple executive search assignments as well as consulting projects focused on hiring strategies and organizational policy planning. As a result, JPG held an intimate understanding of the organization’s specific goals and objectives – and, most importantly, its developmental imperatives.
JPG knew the exact type of person who could advance the institution’s mission – from a skills standpoint. But we were also cognizant of the issues that were crucial in ensuring a personality fit between the incoming executive and the longtime leader.
There were a number of inherent sensitivities. JPG was sensitive to them all. Our industry knowledge and experience – along with the unique insights we had gleaned from our long-term client relationship – enabled us to place a well-respected medical school senior academic in the post. This person had the skills and personality to meet the institution’s long-term requirements. But he also had the people skills needed to affect an all-important, seamless shift in leadership.
The Joel Paul Group led the way in helping to make that happen. |
