It is so tempting to communicate in a mass email format over LinkedIn and Facebook. We are looking for help finding a job so why not email everyone the same message at once?
Mass emails will be seen for what they are: mass emails. One of the keys to networking is connecting on a one on one level and having a conversation. Once you take the communication from a conversation to a loud speaker broadcast, the strength of that message is lost.
The more mass emails that your network receives; the more likely they are to be ignored. It is OK to send a mass email from time to time but use it sparingly. I do it about three times a year- in fact, I plan to send one in a week or two, when it is an extra special initiative I am working on (such as a major update to my website or a book that I have coming out) and I want to get the word out to a large group at once.
When I do send out mass emails, I always plan to follow up with individualized messages later. If someone in your network gets a mass message too frequently, they will begin to ignore even individualized emails from you. Manage your communications effectively for the greatest chance for success.
