I am often asked what is the best strategy to use when networking? The best way to network is by helping others. When you help others, there is less of an expectation of what you want but what you can do for them. When you ask for help at a later date, it is more likely to be received positively. What is the best way professionally to help others? By giving them business!
– Know of a great plumber?
– Can you recommend an accountant?
– Heard of a qualified math tutor?
– Can you think of a wedding planner?
Every day on Linkedin and Facebook, friends and contacts of yours are asking for recommendations of service providers they can use. We are likely to ignore the message if it does not relate directly to use. How about giving each one of those requests thought and consideration? Do you know someone that you can feel confident in recommending to your friend?
If you make referrals, it will help to strengthen your network twofold. Not only are you helping the person in need of a service but you are helping the person that provides the service. Be careful in only recommending someone you know that does good work as it is your reputation that is on the line.
